| The Club organized the Ford-Rotary Menteng Charity Golf Tournament at the Riverside Golf Course at Cimanggis on Thursday 14 December 2006. Twenty nine players enjoyed the bright sunshine and convivial spirit struck during the tournament to post some competitive scores at one of Jakarta’s most reputable golf links. The event was organized by local Jakarta golf-pro, John Russell, from John Russell Golf. Prizes were awarded to individual players as well as to teams for the flight with the highest aggregate score on the day. Many players used the opportunity to purchase ‘Mulligans’ which gave them a chance to have a second shot on any hole. As major sponsor of the tournament, Ford Motor Company kindly offered a new Focus sedan to the first player to fire a hole-in-one on any par-3 hole on the day. As it turned out, and despite some fine strokes, no-one was able to avail themselves of Ford’s prize! |
Apart from providing members and playing guests a fun morning of golf, the tournament had a serious purpose. Since 1999, Rotary Club Jakarta Menteng has raised funds to facilitate open-heart surgery for children from poor families in the Jakarta area who suffer from a debilitating heart condition known as Tetralogy of Fallot. Operations are undertaken on a not-for-profit basis and involve cardiologists at the RS Cipto Mangunkusumo and surgeons at the RS Harapan Kita. Through the Yayasan Jantung Anak Indonesia, the Club selects children based on the severity of their condition as well as the financial background of their parents. The operations, including nutritional supplementation prior to surgery and post-operative recovery, cost on average around Rp 40 million. Monthly incomes of the parents of most patients, however, do not normally exceed Rp 600,000. The tournament at Riverside on 14 December was held to raise funds to cover the cost of a heart operation on one young sufferer of Tetralogy of Fallot.
With numbers of players on the day disappointingly low, the Club hopes that future golf tournaments will attract stronger interest from the Jakarta golfing fraternity and other Rotary Clubs to allow Rotary Club Jakarta Menteng to continue its work to raise funds for young sufferers of debilitating heart disease.
